This client wanted his new home to celebrate his North American achievements and European heritage. After conceiving all the interior volumes and spaces, we used a variety of motifs, textures and patterns so that each room has its own mood, yet a common richness unites the home. The exquisitely detailed rotunda is typical of the graceful balance achieved throughout.

The long upper hall’s rhythmic pattern of doorways, arches and sconces is bathed in light from one custom polished nickel high lens. To achieve symmetry, the three windows were draped to look like two.

The Chippendale inspired ceiling and millwork details subtly contrast with the contemporary mid-century furnishings.

The generous kitchen’s traditional styling in the deeply coffered ceiling and elegantly detailed walnut cabinetry contrasts with gleaming glass tile and stone surfaces and contemporary seating.

In the centrepiece of her bath, the vanity’s graceful curves and fine detailing add classical yet feminine character.

In his luxury spa, the compressed glass and glass mosaic tile floor glistens as does the dramatically-lit frosted glass divider that demarcates the teak-floored wet area. The wall-to-wall glass partition at left is frosted for privacy at toilet and shower areas and is clear at the steam room where it parallels the frosted glass divider.

This lower level spa is introduced by a narrow, spot-lit crevasse waterfall slot. We asked the architect to lower the waterfall space by two feet to allow for under-floor services. The centre panel of teak flooring lifts out for easy access to pump, plumbing and electrical. We also dropped the ceiling in this area for proportion and to hide the angle of the stairs above.

Combining sophisticated masculinity with classical detailing, his bath features rich, dark woods in a custom furniture-like vanity and a crisp window blind in chocolate and taupe.

Filled with bright colour and reflective surfaces, the guest bath in the bar area of this home reflects the entertainment area. The sleek, wall-hung, stainless steel vanity was custom-designed for the space and features a red glass counter top with integrated towelette dispenser and waste container.

Here, strong colours, high gloss surfaces and light make its “fire and ice” themed lower level lounge an exciting entertainment space.

In the lower level lounge of this new home, we asked brilliant glass artist Jeff Goodman to create a collage of pieces that would suggest “fire and ice”, a reference to the owner’s fun-loving personality.
