The renovation of this 1980s home was deeply inspired by its existing architectural curves, which became a central theme extended throughout the new design. This curvilinear language influenced not only the architectural elements but also the selection and design of furniture and décor. The project drew inspiration from the iconic Eppich House by Arthur Erickson, embracing the clean lines and flowing forms characteristic of that era's late modernist aesthetics.

In response to the clients' desire for a calm and restful environment, we developed a palette of soft, muted pastels. This color scheme perfectly complemented the goal of simplifying their living space as they downsized from a much larger home. The challenge of repurposing existing furnishings within this new context added an interesting layer to the design process, showcasing family history within a fresh context.

Functionality was a key driver in the design, with a focus on 'aging in place' concepts. The addition of an elevator, which significantly influenced layout decisions, was central to this approach. Simultaneously, the design had to accommodate the clients' large family gatherings, resulting in expanded dining areas and bedrooms. This dual focus on intimate living and expansive entertaining spaces led to a highly versatile home design. For example, while the kitchen is not extraordinarily large, it uses all available space efficiently to function as a prep kitchen for large-scale meal preparation. These and other design decisions enhanced the home's ability to transition seamlessly from a comfortable space for two to a welcoming environment for many, including visits from the clients’ large family.
